Absolutely. I remain as captivated by Jesus as ever. My spiritual evolution has led me to a place of gratitude toward God. I'm not focused on what happens after we die. I believe that we are here to love each other and make the world a better place for the whole human family.
I do, but probably not in the way that you might expect. Every day we see poverty, abuse, war, addiction, loneliness and pain. To many, that feels like hell. Hell is something that humanity brings upon itself by not loving one another.
The only fire that I expect any of us to encounter in the afterlife is the white, hot flame of God's unconditional love burning away anything that keeps us from resting completely in God's embrace. Could I be wrong? Of course! But the concept of Eternal Conscious Torment so popular in the church today is not in alignment with the character of the God that I have come to experience.
I see the Bible as a collection of poetry, personal narratives, and letters written by human beings over several thousand years, compiled by a church council, and translated into hundreds of languages by various other human beings over many years. As with any written project involving that many humans, it is subject to error and misunderstanding. I find the Biblical text to be representative of the writers' understanding of God at that time. Personally, I find great inspiration and wisdom in the Gospels and the Jesus narrative which teaches us about a kingdom of love not built on violence, power, or religious agreement, but upon mutual compassion.
